Department of Hindi is one of the earliest departments of the college. It was headed by many eminent scholars over the years. Department is connected to all the undergraduate students of the college through Hindi language as a compulsory subject. Hindi Literature is one of the most favoured subjects for both undergraduate and post graduate students which is reflected in the fact that at the undergraduate level the student strength is above 200 and at the PG level it has 80 students. The department has produced many teachers and professors in its journey of 57 years. The department asked for more posts to cope with the rising number of students every academic year.
The Department of English was established along with the inception of the college in 1964. Initially it began as a U G Department and the same status continued till 1991 when it became a PG Department. The department used to teach English language and English literature at the UG level till 1991. The Department of English was fortunate to have Dr. Agnihotri as the principal of the college during the initial years of the college (1974-75) who was an eminent scholar in English having a Ph. D in English from abroad, and he enriched the Central library with invaluable collection of English reference books. With the advent of M. A. English Literature, two more posts were created in the department by the government with one post of Professor and three posts of Assistant Professor. It was the Department of English that took initiative in establishing a departmental library in the college which later led to creation of departmental libraries in all the PG Departments of the college. The English Departmental Library has more than 1500 books including Text books and Reference books. The Department is well-equipped with ICT facilities like Computers, Projector, Wi-Fi connection, and reprographic facilities which are used by the teachers and students to facilitate teaching and learning. The Department has an environment for the teachers and students to interact freely and frankly that facilitates confidence building and creating interest among students. Presently the department has a student strength of fifty each at PG and at UG level. The Department of English has always remained a job-producing department and more than seventy five percent of its alumni are employed, mostly as teachers in schools, and a few in colleges. Faculty of the department shri D K Budholiya, in addition to his PG Degree, has also completed his PGDTE from CIEFL, Hyderabad and specializes in Linguistic Studies. He has also completed one Minor Research Project sponsored by UGC, Bhopal. Dr J K Nair other faculty member of the department has to his credit publication of three critical works viz., The Cutting Edges: Biology of Experience in the Poetry of Kamala Das, The Female Garden: Western Feminist Theories and Indian Women Poets in English, and Sri Aurobindo: The Saint and the Poet, a Study of His Philosophy and Poetry. Dr Nair has also completed two Minor Research Projects sponsored by UGC. He has been guiding Ph.D. Research scholars and has produced 3 Ph.Ds as on date.
The Department of Sociology is one of the earliest departments of the college existing from 1964. The PG department of Sociology was started as early as 1967. Sociology as a subject attracts the largest number of students at the undergraduate level after Political Science. The PG department of Sociology has full strength with 60 students at present. The department of Sociology has the distinction of producing the maximum number of teachers. As many as 15 alumni of the department have become professors of sociology in different States. Dr. Vinod Deshmukh, former Head of the department and Principal-in-Charge, and both the present faculties of the department are its alumni. Under the department of Sociology another PG Programme viz., M. A. in Social Work was started in the year 2011-12 as a self-financing course. Since it is a job-oriented Course it has good student strength.
The Department of Economics started in 1971. Apart from offering Economics as an optional subject at UG level, the department is also running MA in Economics. It has good student strength both at UG and PG levels. The Department of Economics is one of the best staffed departments with four regular faculties. The department has been organizing a good number of seminars, workshops etc. in contemporary and relevant topics useful for students. The department uses ICT-enabled methods of teaching. It has a Departmental library with about 300 books including text books and reference books of PG level.
The Department of History is as old as the college itself. Though initially the department could not attract many students, now the department has 700 students with an average enrolment of 300 students every year. However, the students passing out with History as a subject at B. A. level has presently no opportunity to do PG in the subject. Considering this shortcoming the College Administration, with the approval of Janbhagidari Samiti, has already sent a proposal to the Department of Higher Education to start PG in History. Faculty of the department Dr. B.K. Tyagi has completed two Minor Research Projects from UGC, and has published two books viz., India’s Approach to the Tibetan Question and its Impact on Sino-Indian Relations, and India and The Central Asia: Past, Present and Future An Historical and Socio-Economic Study.
The Department of Geography came into existence in the year 1971 when Govt. of Madhya Pradesh took over the college which was hitherto a private college. Geography as a subject has always been preferred by students owing its proximity to Science, though it is offered as an optional subject in Arts stream. With the ups and downs in student strength the department has withstood the test of time and presently it has full student strength both at UG and PG levels. It has the distinction of the only PG department in the subject in the district of Shajapur. The department has a well-equipped laboratory and a departmental library with more than 400 books. One Lab Technician and a Lab Assistant are posted in the department.
The Faculty of Commerce was in existence right from the inception of the college in 1964. The department was headed by eminent professors during different periods. Initially the department was running only B. Com. M. Com was started in the year 1980-81. Many alumni of the faculty have made their career as Professors, Teachers, Chartered Accountants and as managers in corporate sector. The Department also offers Computer Application and Tax Procedure and Practice as self-financing optional subjects in B. Com.
The Department of Physics came into existence along with the college I 1964. It was made into a PG Department with M. Sc. Physics in the year 1991. The department has three regular faculties. The department has good student strength both in UG and PG. Put together the department has over 500 students. The department has a well-equipped laboratory, and it has separate laboratory spaces for UG and PG. It has a departmental library with about 250 books, both reference and text.
The Department of Chemistry was started along with the commencement of the college in 1964. Since Chemistry remains a compulsory subject in both Mathematics group and Biology group except for those who choose Computer Science, it has the largest number of students in Science stream. Considering the demand for PG programme in Chemistry, the Janbhagidari Samiti and the College Administration took the initiative and started M. Sc. Chemistry in the year 2012 and has been running it successfully as a Self-Financing Course since then. The department of Chemistry has a well-equipped laboratory and it is under further expansion. The department has a departmental library with books.
It is needless to stress upon the importance of the Department of Mathematics since Mathematics is the core subject in B. Sc. Maths group. The department was started along with the college in 1964, and it became a PG department in the year 1991. It is the only department offering M. Sc. in Mathematics in the District of Shajapur. It has very good student strength both at UG and PG classes.
The Department of Botany is the main attraction for the students choosing the Biology group in science stream. The department has been in existence ever since the inception of the college. It has a well-equipped laboratory in a newly constructed building. Considering the long pending demand for PG Course in Botany the college started M. Sc. Botany in the year 2017. The department has recently established a Botanical Garden in the college premises, which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Dr. Mohan Yadav. It has a departmental library with books for PG level students.
The Department of Zoology has been in existence since the inception of the college. Zoology is offered as an optional subject in B. Sc. Biology group. It has a well-equipped laboratory and good student strength. The expansion work of the laboratory is under way. After a long absence of regular faculties. Dr. Mewada and Dr. Yadav have recently been awarded a Minor Project on “People’s Biodiversity Register” by Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board is awarded to the department. The project is aimed to collect and present the flora and fauna biodiversity of Shujalpur block. Recently three UG students of Zoology have applied for Biotech Innovation Ignition School (BIIS) & SITARE-Appreciation Award Grants (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council-BIRAC, Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India)
Microbiology as a self-financing optional subject for B. Sc. Biology group students was introduced in the academic year 2011-12. The subject started attracting a good number of students and now it has a strength of 144 students.
The Computer department of the college started in 2002-03 when Computer Science and Computer Application were offered as self-financing optional subjects with B. Sc. Mathematics group and B. Com respectively. Ever since its beginning, it has been attracting a good number of students. Later Computer Application as an optional subject was also introduced at B. A. level in 2011-12. BCA programme was introduced in the year 2012-13 and M. Sc. Computer Science in 2015-16. Each of these courses and programmes has separate and qualified faculties. Presently the department has seven faculties and two lab attendants, appointed by Janbhagidari Samiti since all programmes and subjects run by the department are self-financing ones. The department has two Computer Laboratories for UG and PG programmes. The Computer library has books. A good number of alumni of the department are employed at different places making their career in computer field. BCA Programme In order to provide more opportunities for employment to science graduates the college started BCA from the academic year 2012-13 as a self-financing programme. The programme attracts good number of students since it is a job-oriented one.
The Department of Law came into existence in the academic year 1967-68 offering LLB degree. From 1997 onwards the Department of Law was brought under Janbhagidari Samiti as a self-financing course. The department was headed by many eminent scholars. Since LLB is a professional course, there is no dearth of students in the department. Presently the department has about 200 students studying law in first, second and third year. Over the years the department has been producing law graduates, many of whom became advocates and are practising both in Shujalpur and at other places. Considering a long pending demand for opening PG course in law, the college has started LLM programme in the academic year 2022-23. The college has obtained NOC from the government for commencing B.A. LLB Four year integrated programme and is waiting for Bar Council’s approval for the same.
