The Department of English was established along with the inception of the college in 1964. Initially it began as a U G Department and the same status continued till 1991 when it became a PG Department. The department used to teach English language and English literature at the UG level till 1991. The Department of English was fortunate to have Dr. Agnihotri as the principal of the college during the initial years of the college (1974-75) who was an eminent scholar in English having a Ph. D in English from abroad, and he enriched the Central library with invaluable collection of English reference books. With the advent of M. A. English Literature, two more posts were created in the department by the government with one post of Professor and three posts of Assistant Professor. It was the Department of English that took initiative in establishing a departmental library in the college which later led to creation of departmental libraries in all the PG Departments of the college. The English Departmental Library has more than 1500 books including Text books and Reference books. The Department is well-equipped with ICT facilities like Computers, Projector, Wi-Fi connection, and reprographic facilities which are used by the teachers and students to facilitate teaching and learning. The Department has an environment for the teachers and students to interact freely and frankly that facilitates confidence building and creating interest among students. Presently the department has a student strength of fifty each at PG and at UG level. The Department of English has always remained a job-producing department and more than seventy five percent of its alumni are employed, mostly as teachers in schools, and a few in colleges. Faculty of the department shri D K Budholiya, in addition to his PG Degree, has also completed his PGDTE from CIEFL, Hyderabad and specializes in Linguistic Studies. He has also completed one Minor Research Project sponsored by UGC, Bhopal. Dr J K Nair other faculty member of the department has to his credit publication of three critical works viz., The Cutting Edges: Biology of Experience in the Poetry of Kamala Das, The Female Garden: Western Feminist Theories and Indian Women Poets in English, and Sri Aurobindo: The Saint and the Poet, a Study of His Philosophy and Poetry. Dr Nair has also completed two Minor Research Projects sponsored by UGC. He has been guiding Ph.D. Research scholars and has produced 3 Ph.Ds as on date.
